The Claw of Death
After several hours in the photo hide at Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana, we were about to leave when our attention was captured by a life and death drama in the corner. The Marsh Terrapins seem to lead a very quiet and largely inaminate existence, yet suddenly one turned hunter catching a Laughing Dove by surprise as it drank at the waterhole. Although a known behaviour, it had not previously been seen here, and the Terrapin's grip was sufficient to drown the dove despite its desperate struggle for freedom.
